Global Sustainable Tourism Council Early Adopters, Revisited

samoa WASHINGTON, D.C. (July 21, 2014) – The Global Sustainable Tourism  Council (GSTC) conducted its  Early Adopter program from 2012 through  early 2014. During the program, a diverse group of fourteen forward-  thinking destinations worldwide pilot tested the Global Sustainable  Tourism Criteria for Destinations.

Each Early Adopter underwent a baseline destination sustainability assessment applying the Criteria, and received recommendations to address any gaps. Early Adopters also provided their feedback on the Criteria. This input from the fourteen diverse destinations was critical to ensuring that the GSTC Criteria for Destinations are appropriate and applicable as the global performance standard for destination sustainability.

Several Early Adopter representatives joined us in Bonito, Brazil, earlier in April during the GSTC Annual General Meeting (AGM) and discussed their experiences. They shared their insights about tourism planning, economic development, community involvement, heritage protection, and environmental conservation. Further, they revelealed that their destination has made considerable progress on some significant sustainability issues and introduced the challenges they currently face.

Upcoming Board Nominations & Elections

The GSTC 2014 Board Elections are now open for nominations!

The Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) is now welcoming nominations and applications for board members, including self-nominations, now, through July 31. Board members of the GSTC will provide balanced and broad geographical representation, insight, expertise, and commitment to the highest operational authority for the organization, which provides guidance on the standards for sustainable tourism.

Dr Dirk Glaesser joins the GSTC Board of Directors

Dirk GlaesserDr. Dirk Glaesser is Director for the Sustainable Development Programme of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). Along with UNEP, the United Nations Environment Program, UNWTO maintains a permanent seat on the GSTC Board of Directors. As of June 1st, Dirk assumed that UNWTO seat on the GSTC board. (As such, he replaced Luigi Cabrini who was at the same time appointed by the GSTC Board to become its Chair.)

The UNWTO's Sustainable Development of Tourism Programme, which Dirk now directs and Luigi formerly directed, addresses the generation of social, economic and cultural benefits for host communities resulting from sustainable development of tourism, while minimizing the negative impacts upon the natural or socio-cultural environments. The UNWTO Programme naturally works in close partnership with the GSTC.
