February 4-5, 2017 - GSTC Sustainable Tourism Training, Akita, Japan

The Asian Ecotourism Network (AEN), a GSTC Training Partner, in collaboration with Ecotourism Japan, will be organizing a GSTC training class from 4-5 February 2017, in conjunction with the 3rd Sustainable Tourism Forum in Senboku City, Akita, Japan (6-7 February 2017).

Following the Forum, GSTC training participants will participate in a local excursion, which highlights culture and winter ecotours. The training will be offered both in Japanese and English, with a maximum group size of 20.

By following the GSTC Industry and Destination Criteria as the framework, the 3-day training (17-19 March 2017) covers key topics such as sustainable tourism standards and certification, tourism's roles in the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and best practices in destination management, both from the policy and development perspectives.

November, 2015 TALLER GSTC - Guanajuato, México

From 9-13 November, 2015, the second training workshop for leaders on Global Tourism Criteria and its application in sustainable development and sustainable tourism in Mexico and Latin America took place in Guanajuato, Mexico.  

The program addressed how the GSTC criteria has been implemented in the management of tourist destinations.  Activities included the provision of conceptual theoretical issues, field experience and technical guided tours.

November 2015 World Summit on Sustainable Tourism ST+20 - Spain

Building on the Charter for Sustainable Tourism adopted at the first World Conference on Sustainable Tourism in 1995, Sustainable Tourism +20 addressed adaptation to the current world situation twenty years later.  Sustainable Tourism +20 was therefore the major event of 2015 to bring together the key actors in sustainable tourism in the search for a new drive to work towards its goals.  The important themes of the summit were Preserving Our Common Heritage, Tourism Supporting Biodiversity, Climate Change & Tourism, Redistributing Wealth and Looking for Peace, Partnerships for a Sustainable Future and Intelligent Visions and Innovation. AFoCo Forest Week October 2015 - South Korea

AFW2015 banner 1The ASEAN-ROK Forest Cooperation (AFoCo) held a week-long event under the theme of "Mobilizing People and Forest Together for Greener Asia" in accordance with AFoCo's objectives to facilitate forest cooperation, undertake projects and translate sound forest policies and proven technologies into action with a mission to rehabilitate degraded forest land and to prevent deforestation and forest degradation in the context of sustainable forest management.

GSTC CEO Randy Durband was a featured speaker during the workshop entitled "Enhancing Local Livelihood through Participatory and Eco-friendly Approach" on the topic conservation travel in forest areas as a vehicle for economic activity that encourages forest protection by local communities.

2015 GSTC Annual General Meeting Held in Huangshan, China

Screen Shot 2015 09 17 at 11.31.16 PMThe GSTC 2015 Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held September 10-13, hosted by long-time member Huangshan Administrative Committee (HSAC) which manages the World Heritage site of Mount Huangshan, China. 

The AGM featured a keynote address on sustainable destinations from Jonathan Tourtellot of National Geographic, and workshops and panel discussions from industry and government leaders, updates on GSTC's activities, a presentation on IHG's Green Engage Program and the management of the IHG Crowne Plaza Yucheng Huanshan where the meeting was held, a visit to the protected area/World Heritage site, and extensive networking among participants.

A GSTC Sustainability Training and Accreditation Workshop was held in Bonn, Germany 21-24 July. This workshop was hosted by the GSTC accreditation partner, Accreditation Services International (ASI). The training program is specifically targeted to certification bodies that may wish to seek GSTC Accreditation for their existing or proposed sustainable tourism certification programs. This workshop provided specific professional development and recognition training for certification body’s auditors and decision makers as well as a provide an opportunity for input to a current review of the GSTC Accreditation Manual.

May 21 2015 Global Sustainability Standards Conference: A Roadmap to Change

Randy Durband spoke at this event discussing how certification can assist in solving problems like rural poverty and climate change.  Standards and certification are making strides to drive better production practices around the world and raise the sustainability bar in many sectors, but the earth's systems remain in crisis, with climate change continuing and the world's forests and oceans still in a precarious state. This conference addressed topics such as supporting higher wages, the business case for certification, technology innovations, and engaging with governments.

The GSTC Latin America Regional Meeting was held in Quito, Ecuador prior to the start of the Ecotourism and Sustainable Tourism Conference (ESTC15). Apr 10-14, 2015 11th International Conference on Responsible Tourism in Destinations

This conference explored responsible tourism and the issues of including marginalized citizens as producers and consumers of tourism. Additionally, the conference examined ways in which responsible tourism principles can contribute to making better environments for people to live in, and visit. This conference aspired to review practice and set the agenda for the next decade and to identify the best answers to the question: How can tourism be used to make better places for people to live in, and better places for people to visit?

The second edition of this congress addressed both energy and tourism together. Sustainable Riviera Maya (SRM) and the GSTC hosted a workshop on sustainable destinations and the application of the GSTC Criteria. This workshop explored the intersection of sustainable development and tourism, and provided practical guidance on adopting the Global Criteria in Mexico and throughout Latin America. The Responsible Tourism Institute (ITR) hosted the GSTC Destinations Community Summit on November 20-21, 2014 in Barcelona, Spain. This 2-day event was open to destinations certified under a GSTC-Approved standard, destinations that have undergone a GSTC sustainability assessment, destinations currently in the process of certification and destinations that have formally expressed their interest in starting the process.

The Ibero-American Forum in Sustainable Tourism (FITS) was held in Santiago de Chile. GSTC Member, Erika Harms, spoke. The forum educated participants on sustainability implications and benefits; promoted networking opportunities; and conveyed experiences and programs that have worked successfully in other destinations. Sept. 27, 2014 - Int'l Conference on Sustainable Tourism, Gujarat India

On September 27th the state of Gujarat, India hosted the International Conference on Sustainable Tourism.  GSTC Chair Luigi Cabrini presented on the concepts of sustainable tourism.  He also participated in a panel discussion on "Drivers of success in implementing sustainable tourism." GSTC Member, Jonathan Tourtellot, also spoke and participated in the panel discussion. September 17, 2014 GSTC Regional Meeting in Cambodia

The Global Sustainable Tourism Council invited its members and industry professionals to the GSTC Regional Meeting in Phnom Penh, Cambodia on September 17, 2014. The meeting coincided with the Responsible Travel Pavilion at PATA Travel Mart. Following a brief presentation on current GSTC activities and future plans, participants engaged in discussion on issues surrounding sustainability standards and certification, education and training on sustainability, and how to better inspire travel companies and travelers toward greater sustainability.
