The GSTC Destinations Program helps destinations across the globe benefit from systematic application of the leading Criteria to improve destination sustainability.
The Global Sustainable Tourism Council's Criteria for Destinations (GSTC-D) outline the world's most widely accepted sustainable tourism practices for destinations. They complement the GSTC Criteria for Hotels and Tour Operators, and cover the four main themes of destination sustainability: (1) sustainability management, (2) economic benefits to the host community, (3) community, visitor, and cultural well-being, and (4) environmental protection. The Criteria are publicly available as guidelines for any stakeholder interested in managing sustainability at the destination level.

The GSTC Destinations Program is designed to build destinations' capacity in applying the GSTC Criteria. The GSTC itself never provides certification, but encourages destinations to pursue sustainability Certification by a GSTC Approved or Accredited Program that meets GSTC requirements for competence, transparency, and impartiality. The GSTC Destinations Program can serve as a capacity building step for destinations interested in—but not yet ready to undergo—destination sustainability certification.
For all destinations—even those with no previous experience with sustainability—the GSTC Destinations Program offers valuable engagement with a GSTC destination expert providing custom guidance on the world's leading destination sustainability standard: the GTSC Criteria for Destinations.
