The GSTC is saddened by the loss of Carlos Alberto Arrarte, GSTC Country Representative for Peru

The Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) and its members are very saddened by the loss of Carlos Alberto Arrarte (1954-2017), Carlos Alberto became the GSTC Country Representative for Peru last month, after attending GSCT2017 in Aysen, Chile.

In his new role as GSTC Country Representative for Peru, Carlos Alberto had begun planning a regional conference to mobilize support to help implement the Chapaq Nan Route (Andean road system), which is a collection of ancient roads that were built during the Inca Empire. Chapaq Nan was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage «Routes» Site which Peru shares with Bolivia, Ecuador, Argentina, Colombia, and Chile.

On Friday 13 Oct 2017, Carlos Alberto died in a traffic accident in The Sacred Valley of the Incas. He was on his way to a meeting of authorities and representatives of different public and private institutions to carry out the “Wallata Plan”, a Tourism Development Plan for Ollantaytambo, during 2016-2021, to ensure the sustainability of Ollantaytambo as a “Living Inca Town” destination.

Carlos Alberto was known for his charm, charisma, and professionalism in the tourism world, and for making human development the basis of his work.

The GSTC and its members send condolences to his widow Ann and the Arrarte family and thank Carlos Alberto for everything he has done.
