Sustainable Business Travel Online Course for Industry Professionals

The GSTC Sustainable Business Travel course provides the knowledge and tools needed to help improve sustainability practices in business travel. The training follows the GSTC Criteria, the global standards for sustainability in travel and tourism, and provides best practices for a business travel program.

Delivered as a 4-week-long facilitated and interactive training class, the sustainable business travel online course offers a convenient way to improve your sustainability skills in a flexible online learning environment, while at the same time learning alongside GSTC experts and fellow sustainable business travel practitioners.

GSTC Professional Certificate in Sustainable Business Travel

By completing this 4-week online course, you will meet the training requirement towards earning the GSTC Professional Certificate in Sustainable Business Travel.

Once you complete the course, you will have the option to take the GSTC Sustainable Business Travel Exam. The exam takes place online, and you will have 4 weeks after the course to submit it. If you pass the exam (75% and above passing mark is required), you will receive a Professional Certificate in Sustainable Business Travel by the GSTC.

The certificate demonstrates your knowledge of sustainable business travel best practices.

Bernard Harrop 

Bernard is an independent consultant with over 25 years sales and marketing experience in the business travel industry. He was formerly a European Executive Board Member with American Express and Head of Global Sales with British Airways. In addition to managing his own corporate consulting company, he was a founder member of the sustainability advisory board at the Institute of Travel and Meetings, and Head of Sustainability for Project ICARUS – a GBTA Foundation initiative to integrate sustainability into the way organizations manage, run and supply travel and meetings programs. Bernard is a recognized sustainability commentator and regularly seen speaking and facilitating at leading industry events across Europe and North America. He currently lectures in sustainability at Marbella University Business School and Cranfield University, and has previously been voted one of the ‘top 25 most influential executives in global corporate travel’ by Business Travel News.

Horst Bayer 

Horst Bayer managed Corporate Travel Programs for Siemens USA between 1999 and 2008, and Hitachi Data Systems in EMEA between 2009 and 2015. In 2016 he founded TravelHorst – Sustainable Business Travel Consulting. A firm that is dedicated in helping multinational corporations transforming their Corporate Travel Program to sustainability. TravelHorst is a member of BAUM eV, a Federal German Working Group for Environmentally-Conscious Management. Horst is also Chair of the Business Travel Working Group at the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) that establishes and manages global sustainable standards in the MICE and Corporate Travel area with the aim of increasing sustainable travel knowledge and practices among public and private stakeholders. Horst earned a bachelor’s in global business from the University of Phoenix and holds a certificate for sustainable tourism. Horst is a trained Climate Reality Leader devoted to solving the global climate crisis.


Nora Lovell Marchant
Vice President, Global Sustainability, American Express Global Business Travel

Vice President of Global Sustainability for American Express Global Business Travel, providing subject matter expertise and spearheading sustainability strategy with respect to internal targets and external products and services. Previously, Nora was a litigator at Schulte, Roth & Zabel, with a specialty in environmental law. Headline cases included representing the country of Mexico in a lawsuit against British Petroleum in connection with the natural resource damages and economic devastation resulting from the April 2010 Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Nora served as a law clerk for the Natural Resources Defense Council within the Climate Program, writing NRDC’s comment in response to the EPA’s Notice of Proposed Rulemaking regarding Regulating Greenhouse Gas Emissions Under the Clean Air Act. Nora also served as a law clerk for the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Southern District of California, Criminal Division, Major Frauds Section, Environmental Crimes Unit, prosecuting a high-profile asbestos case against a major utility company before a jury. Nora has a B.S. (Environmental Science) from Cornell University and a J.D. from The George Washington University Law School.

Olivia Ruggles-Brise
Director, Greenview

Olivia has over 15 years’ experience in the travel and hospitality sector in sustainability, strategy, communications and consultancy. Olivia works on the development of Greenview’s industry-wide projects such as the Cornell Hotel Sustainability Benchmarking Index and Green Lodging Trends Report, as well as industry methodologies such as the recently launched Hotel Waste Measurement Methodology with WWF, and the ongoing Net Zero Methodology for Hotels. She also advises hospitality clients on both the operator and owner side to set up and deliver ESG programmes. She joined Greenview from the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) where she led the organisation’s strategy, research and sustainability initiatives for nearly ten years. Olivia was also responsible for the programme for WTTC’s annual Global Summit and regional events, the annual Tourism for Tomorrow awards programme, and setting the organisation’s strategy based on industry trends and insights. Prior to joining WTTC, Olivia was a consultant with The Tourism Company and developed sustainable tourism strategies for destinations around the UK and internationally as well as hotel and cruise feasibility studies and audience development plans for heritage sites. Olivia is based in London, UK. She has a Masters degree in Tourism, Environment and Development studies from King’s College London and a Bachelors degree in French and Spanish from the University of Edinburgh.

Albena Taseva
Regional Sourcing Manager – Business Travel, Codan Forsikring

Albena is an advocate for designing and implementing sustainable solutions, being those processes, policies, tech systems. In the past 5+ years she has been focusing on driving change and digitalization projects within the area of Business Travel, as well as setting both the strategic category direction and securing process excellence for local as well as regional corporate travel programs. Albena is a holder of Danish Business Travel Association (DBTA) Recognition Award 2019 – for converting Codan/Trygg-Hansa’s travel program into a seamless solution for company’s corporate travellers. She is also a Board Member of the Danish Business Travel Association (DBTA). Albena completed recently the first GSTC course in Sustainable Business Travel and is a proud holder of GSTC Professional Certificate in Sustainable Business Travel.

Glenn Thorsen
Head of Partnerships, Thrust Carbon

Glenn has a strong entrepreneurial background and passion for innovation throughout all areas of business. He has been involved in several successes within the business travel and meetings industries, including multiple successful acquisitions and regional launches covering global activities in areas including APAC, EMEA & North America. In his role as Director of Partnerships for Thrust Carbon Glenn is focused on driving increased transparency and collaboration across multiple categories to enable even more detailed reporting and capabilities where sustainability metrics are concerned.

Helen Brough

Helen spent the last 19+ years building and leading the Policy, Sustainability, and Meetings and Events Practice lines for American Express. Over the last five years, Helen has expanded her focus to build Meeting and Diversity strategies for global Fortune 100 companies. This includes, designing and delivered a global Supplier Diversity Strategy for a Billion Dollar Round table member committed to shifting 10% of their Travel and Meetings spend to Minority Owned Businesses. Currently Helen is researching Fortune 500 companies’ commitment to Diversity positions and continues mentor students in the Meetings and Events industry.

Randy Durband

Randy Durband has had two careers in travel and tourism – twenty-plus years in senior leadership positions at some of the finest U.S. tour operators, having served as President for Travcoa, INTRAV, and Clipper Cruise Lines, (brands within TUI Travel plc), plus Executive Vice President of Tauck World Discovery. Following that, in his second travel and tourism career, Randy advanced the work of Sustainable Tourism as an advisor, consultant, and speaker. He brings his knowledge of the business of travel, his global network of travel professionals, and a passion for sustainability to support the GSTC and the general sustainable tourism movement. He has held several board positions and committee memberships in travel and tourism organizations, and is a frequent speaker on sustainable tourism issues.

If you would like to take the exam after the course, you can select the add-on option “Exam & Certificate” when you register. You will also have the option to sign up for the exam during and after the course.
