Sustainable Tourism Online Course for Industry Professionals

The GSTC Sustainable Tourism Training Program (STTP) provides the knowledge and resources needed to help improve sustainability practices by tourism industry businesses and destinations. Built on the framework of the GSTC Criteria, the global baseline standards for sustainability in travel and tourism, the STTP training class will help you achieve tangible actions that fulfill the globally recognized standard of sustainability best practices.

Delivered as a 4-week-long facilitated and interactive training class, the sustainable tourism online course offers a convenient way to improve your sustainability skills in a flexible online learning environment, while at the same time learning alongside GSTC experts and fellow sustainable tourism practitioners.

By completing this 4-week online training class of the STTP, you will meet the training requirement towards earning the GSTC Certificate in Sustainable Tourism.

Once you complete the class, you will have have access to the official STTP Exam, and upon successful completion (75% and above passing mark is required), receive a Certificate in Sustainable Tourism by the GSTC to demonstrate your knowledge of sustainable tourism standards and practices.

TRAINERS & PRESENTERS

GSTC Trainer: Antje Martins

Antje is currently an Associate Lecturer at the University of Queensland. Prior to joining academia, Antje has worked in tourism and hospitality for more than 15 years across several countries such as Germany, France and Australia. With the aim of helping to minimize the impact of the tourism and hospitality industry on its social, cultural and ecological environment, she focuses on educating and mentoring future industry leaders. To help the industry improve further, Antje has also started her PhD on the topic of sustainable workforce.

Previously she served as the Training and Corporate Project Manager at EarthCheck, the world’s leading scientific certification and advisory group for travel and tourism, as well as managing the EarthCheck Training Academy. Training development and delivery, speaking engagements and workshop facilitation has always been an integral part of her journey, including on-the-job training of new staff, facilitating climate change workshops, speaking at industry conventions and now managing. She is a Certified Asia Pacific Visitor Economy Expert through the Pacific Asia Tourism Association (PATA).

In addition to being a GSTC Trainer, Antje is a member of the GSTC Education and Training Working Group (ETWG).

Course Facilitator: Ayako Ezaki, GSTC Training Director

Ayako Ezaki is Co-Founder and Head of Knowledge Management & Communications at TrainingAid, an international tourism and training company offering online training courses and skills development opportunities for tourism industry professionals.

Having worked for over ten years in tourism professional training and education in the non-profit sector, Ayako specializes in content building, educational program design, and project planning. She also brings many years of experience in online communications, social media marketing, and web publishing. Through TrainingAid’s partnership with the GSTC, Ayako serves as Training Director to develop, manage and market the GSTC Sustainable Tourism Training Program (STTP).

Guest Expert Presenters

Randy Durband, GSTC CEO

Randy Durband 200Randy Durband has had two careers in travel and tourism – twenty-plus years in senior leadership positions at some of the finest U.S. tour operators, having served as President for Travcoa, INTRAV, and Clipper Cruise Lines, (brands within TUI Travel plc), plus Executive Vice President of Tauck World Discovery. Following that, in his second travel and tourism career, Randy advanced the work of Sustainable Tourism as an advisor, consultant, and speaker.

He brings his knowledge of the business of travel, his global network of travel professionals, and a passion for sustainability to support the GSTC and the general sustainable tourism movement. He has held several board positions and committee memberships in travel and tourism organizations, and is a frequent speaker on sustainable tourism issues.

Kirsi Hyvaerinen

Kirsi Hyvaerinen has worked in the intersection of destinations, tourism businesses, associations and NGOs since the mid-90s, supporting their joint development from master planning to operational excellence. She focuses on sustainable tourism, capacity building, organizational change, product diversification in emerging and developed destinations, branding and marketing. “You help businesses and places keep their promises” described one of her clients.

In 2013, Kirsi founded the South-East European base of PRÁTTO Consulting, she is co-founder and partner of ITB Advisory and chapter leader of Travel Massive Montenegro. Since 2018, she serves in the Management Board of the Global Ecotourism Network.

Under her project management since 2003, the VDR Business Travel Report Germany delivers representative facts and trends on occupational mobility. Of Finnish origin, Kirsi loves the great outdoors and its protection is close to her heart. She holds a degree in Business Administration (Tourism Management and Marketing) from Heilbronn University, Germany. Since 2006, her basecamp is in the mountains of Montenegro.

Martin Heng

Martin Heng is Accessible Travel Manager & Editorial Adviser for Lonely Planet. Born in the UK, Martin gained a BA and MA in English literature from Cambridge University before embarking on a career as an editor in 1985. He recently completed an MA in Communications at RMIT University in Melbourne. He left England in 1987 and lived, worked and travelled on four continents before migrating to Australia to start a family. He has worked for Lonely Planet since 1999 in numerous roles, including seven years as Editorial Manager, when he was responsible for the production of all Lonely Planet books. A road accident in 2010 left him a quadriplegic. He is currently Lonely Planet’s Accessible Travel Manager & Editorial Adviser, a role he has held since 2013.

In his current role as Lonely Planet’s Accessible Travel Manager & Editorial Adviser, he has published a number of accessible travel titles, including a guide to Rio de Janeiro that was supplied to all athletes participating in the 2016 Paralympics. He also maintains the world’s largest collection of Accessible Travel Online Resources, now in its third edition, which was featured in the UNWTO’s Good Practice in the Accessible Tourism Supply Chain. His most recent publication is an Accessible Travel Phrasebook, featuring disability-specific words and phrases in 35 languages.

Matthias Beyer

Matthias Beyer is Managing Director of mascontour GmbH, a Berlin based international consulting firm for sustainable tourism development (analysis, planning, management, marketing and PR, evaluation and monitoring). He is a fully qualified graduate of the hotel business with a certificate from the Chamber of Commerce and Industry and holds an engineering degree in landscape planning with a specialization in sustainable tourism planning.

After completing his studies, he worked as a freelance consultant and expert for several years and conducted various national and international tourism projects. In 2005 he co-founded the international consulting firm mascontour that offers sustainable solutions for destinations, tourism businesses, policy makers and development cooperation. The firm has since implemented about 100 tourism projects in over 40 countries.

In addition, Matthias works as a lecturer at the Bremen University of Applied Sciences and prepared a number of trade publications. He is a member of several organizations, including the Sustainability Committee of the German Travel Association (DRV).

Jeremy Smith

Jeremy Smith is a writer, speaker and sustainable tourism consultant studying the transformative potential of the travel industry and its potential for supporting destination and social resilience. He is the author of Transforming Travel – realising the potential of sustainable tourism and Clean Breaks – 500 New Ways to See the World; and he edits Travindy.com the travel industry sustainable tourism news site.

He writes a fortnightly blog on sustainable tourism for World Travel Market and WTTC’s monthly Tourism for Tomorrow newsletter. He has written briefing papers for organisations including the UK National Parks, Travel Foundation, PATA and the European Travel Foundation. He delivers regular keynote speeches for destinations and companies; is a member of Rotterdam’s International Advisory Board; and provides ongoing sustainable tourism consultancy to Tripadvisor.
