Tablet Hotels’ Sustainability Program Gains Momentum

Tablet Hotels, the hotel experts at the MICHELIN® Guide, has launched a hotel sustainability program, making it easy for travelers to choose hotels that are working to make a positive impact on the planet and in their community. The program features the sustainability icon, which indicates hotels that have sustainable operations and expands to display their practices and certifications in simple language that anyone can understand.

Already more than 1,000 hotels in the Tablet selection have earned the icon since its Earth Day 2022 (April 22) launch on the Tablet Hotels website and app, and MICHELIN Guide app. Hotels have been eager to promote their initiatives, and to take advantage of increased demand for sustainable travel.

78% of travelers intend to stay in a sustainable property this year, compared with 46% who stayed in one last year, according to a 2022 Sustainability Report from Booking.com. The biggest reported challenge for travelers was a lack of awareness that sustainable accommodations exist.

“More and more travelers say sustainability is important to them, but they don’t always know where to find the right information,” said Lucy Lieberman, CEO of Tablet Hotels. “We want to provide the tools they need to make hotel choices that fit their values, and we want to show that travel and sustainability are not at odds. The sustainability icon is just the first part of our plans to accomplish those goals.”

Hotels receive the sustainability icon by completing a self-assessment that focuses on their environmental impact, social responsibility and cultural heritage. The icon also appears when a hotel holds a verified certification with standards recognized by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), or that has been awarded by authorities such as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), from the U.S. Green Building Council, and Accor’s Planet 21.

The program will leverage Tablet’s influence a leading hotel curator, with the goal of making sustainable operations as fundamental to hospitality as service, design and cuisine. “This is an impactful moment in the travel industry,” says Roi Ariel, General Manager of the GSTC. “Tablet has spent more than two decades defining the essential qualities of a great hotel; now they’re helping to put sustainability at the top of that list.”
