Traveloka partners with GSTC to support hotels in Indonesia on their sustainability transformation

Jakarta, 6 September 2022 – Traveloka, as an innovation-oriented travel and lifestyle platform, supports emerging trends such as sustainability, that shape the travel and hospitality sector by partnering with the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) to offer a course on Sustainable Tourism to key hotel partners in Indonesia during September 2022.

The travel surge in Indonesia itself has been a positive push factor to promote sustainability further among the Traveloka users and hotel merchants. As of Q2 this year, according to Indonesia’s statistics agency, the increase of tourists has significantly risen to about 172% compared to the same period in the previous year in 2021. In consideration with the increase of tourists to Indonesia and their awareness towards sustainability issues, Traveloka has captured the momentum to partner with GSTC in promoting more sustainable initiatives through a course to prepare the knowledge standards.

Caesar Indra, President of Traveloka says, “As the leading travel and lifestyle platform in Southeast Asia, we would like to play an active role in building a sustainable future within the travel ecosystem. This tremendous undertaking can only be achieved through long-term collaboration with stakeholders that share our vision for the future, such as GSTC. By combining their expertise and Traveloka’s wide network and strong relationships with hoteliers, the region stands a chance for a more sustainable tourism ecosystem.”

The GSTC Sustainable Tourism course comprises eight online sessions of 1½ hours each, which spans over four weeks and is delivered in Bahasa Indonesia. The course helps to provide in-depth knowledge of the GSTC Criteria, the global standard for sustainability in travel and tourism; gives the skills to make informed decisions on how to implement sustainability practices in hotels; and provides the ground for developing viable and actionable sustainable tourism policies and practices.

The first session took place on September 6th, 2022, led by GSTC Trainer Nalendra Mochamad.  The course language was in Bahasa Indonesia with 25 participants from Indonesia hotels.

One key benefit of participating in this course is the opportunity to take the official GSTC Sustainable Tourism Course Exam and upon successful completion, receive a Professional Certificate in Sustainable Tourism by the GSTC. The certification demonstrates personal knowledge of sustainable tourism standards and practices.

“Since becoming a GSTC Member earlier this year, Traveloka has been actively engaging in ways to promote sustainability in the tourism sector. By sponsoring a GSTC Sustainable Tourism course, Traveloka supports hoteliers in Indonesia to gain the necessary knowledge and skills, which in turn allow them to operate more sustainably,” says Randy Durband, Chief Executive Officer of the GSTC.

Traveloka officially joined as a member of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) in June 2022.
