Furano Sustainable Action Promotion Meeting (FSAPM), sponsored the GSTC Sustainable Tourism Training for their tourism stakeholders in Furano Hokkaido, Japan. The three-day training in Japanese was held from November 28 to November 30, 2023. 

The training was led by GSTC Trainer, Dr. Mami Futagami, Dr., Professor Emeritus, Meijo University who shared her knowledge and expertise with practical examples and valuable insights.

Participants had the opportunity to do a site visit to Torinuma Park, a natural green space located in Furano City, distinguished by an emerald green pond and filled with approximately 400 kinds of plants, where they learned and spoke about: 

  • The extermination of invasive species and preservation of wetlands 
  • How to maintain land value and sell local products 
  • And the preservation of culture and landscape

They concluded the training with a tour of the city of Furano.

The GSTC Sustainable Tourism Course provided participants with the essential knowledge and skills to champion sustainable tourism practices. It presented an excellent opportunity to delve into the GSTC Criteria the global standards for sustainability in tourism and travel. The inclusion of global and local case studies enhanced the value of the training.

Upon successful course completion, participants receive a certificate of completion and become eligible to take an optional official exam to obtain the GSTC Professional Certificate in Sustainable Tourism.
